Baby J’s newborn photoshoot

Baby J’s newborn photoshoot

Little Mr J and his adorable big sister “Miss E”  came along to the studio this past weekend for his newborn session when he was just a gorgeously brand new 12 days old! Their Mummy and Daddy were fans of my work and gave me free reign to style the session so I took full advantage and used some gorgeous new props and accessories which I think looked amazing! Mr J loved being wrapped up snug and was an absolute superstar poser for his session as I am sure you can tell from the beautiful photos we captured on the day.

His big sister “Little Miss E” was also on amazing form and was just besotted with her baby brother and such a great little model on the day! While baby J was having a little feed I wrapped up Mr stunt bear (those of you who have been to the studio for newborn sessions with an older sibling will have met him!) to show Miss E what we would be doing with her baby brother and we had a little practice with Mr bear but in all honesty I don’t think she needed it, she was awesome! As a mum of two myself now I know how special the sibling photo I have of my boys is to me so I really hope Mummy and Daddy love these images as much as I do.

Once Little Miss E had fulfilled her big sister duties she and Daddy popped off to the lovely Turtledove Play Cafe which is very close by and enjoyed some play time while her baby brother posed up a storm. Baby J was absolutely dreamy and such a delight, he slept beautifully and with a little patience and careful posing we managed to capture all of the poses and setups that Mummy and Daddy had requested. An hour later we were all done and I really hope Mummy and Daddy agree that we created some beautiful images of their beautiful children, there are definitely some new favourites of mine in the gallery!

My diary is now closed for January through to March but I am taking bookings from April – December with very limited availability remaining for newborn, baby and cake smash session so please do get in touch in advance to make sure I can fit you in!

Newborn Photoshoot featuring Miss Maisie ~ 15 days new

Maisie came along to the Beautiful Bairns studio when she was just 15 days new to have her newborn photoshoot and was an absolute dream! Mummy and Daddy also stepped in front of the camera for some beautiful family images with their daughter and they are firm favourites of mine! Despite being first time parents Daniel and Natalie were incredibly relaxed throughout the session and more than happy to sit back and watch as I gently posed Maisie on the beanbag and in a number of props. As we wanted to capture them as a family we started the session with these images so that Daniel and Natalie could then relax and watch their little lady be the star of the show.

Every newborn photoshoot with Beautiful Bairns in entirely baby led and invariably sometimes babies will have a little “accident” while nappy free but this didn’t phase any of us and I am very used to it! After a feed and a cuddle with Mummy, Maisie was already fairly tired so just needed some gentle rocking and my trusty white noise machine to get her off to a nice deep sleep. During this time we had a chat about colours, props and accessories so I could style the session to suit Mummy & Daddys taste and home decor. Once settled into a nice deep sleep I posed Maisie on the beanbag with a few headbands and accessories before wrapping her up for some prop shots. I think you’ll all agree she rocked her first photoshoot and looks absolutely beautiful! Mummy and Daddy have already said they would like to bring her back for a cake smash and I can’t wait to see them all again!

I would highly recommend Beautiful Bairns, great quality photos in a very relaxing atmosphere. Rachael really took the time to help relax my baby and make her feel as comfortable as possible, as well as making myself and my partner feel comfortable. Overall very impressed with today’s experience!! We will be back, massive thank you to Rachael you are fantastic!

Let’s give ourselves a break, and maybe a kitkat…..

Let’s give ourselves a break, and maybe a kitkat…..

Let’s give ourselves a break, and maybe a kitkat…..

I had a call this past week from a client, her newborn session was due to take place the following morning and I figured she wanted to chat last minute about styling, colours, what to bring etc. Nope. She was wanting to postpone the session as her wee man just wasn’t ready. Was I annoyed? Was I heck! We chatted for a good ten or fifteen minutes and she caught me up on how everything had been going, the birth, how different he was so far to her other kids, how he wasn’t settling and screamed more than she remembered them ever doing. Did I want her to suck it up and come in anyway so we could bash on arranged? Not a single bit. I wanted her to stay home, snuggle, feed, sleep and get to know him and let him get to know her. The only thing about her call that upset me was that she may have even worried that i would be upset in the slightest at having to change our planned session.

Babies are unpredictable little bundles. We never know when they’ll arrive, sometimes we don’t know what gender they will be, sometimes the surprise us with post birth complications that throw all our plans out the window. Sometimes they throw a major spanner in the works as in the case of one of my good friends and they have you on bed rest from 20 weeks and then pop out as teeny little preemies meaning you don’t even have the pregnancy you had planned never mind anything else!

Chatting with my client tonight made me think again about how much pressure we put ourselves under and have out on us by other people to be able to just sail through parenthood and for everything to magically fall into place easily. But thats just not reality, at least not for me or anyone I know.

My own wee bundle is now almost 3 months old and life is so much easier than in the first few weeks. We have a semblance of a routine (don’t get me wrong it can all go out the window at the drop of a hat, and will continue to for the next 3 years!) we sleep, albeit still broken by a feed at around 2 or 4am, not my favourite time of day by any means. But we get by. I even shower and manage to blow dry my hair most days 😉 My pre pregnancy jeans fit, but I still prefer my over bump ones as they’re so cosy and draught free! And I’ve even managed to enjoy the odd glass of wine with friends. So I feel much more like “me” again. But Im not the same old me that I was. I’m a new version of “me”.

Your baby is brand new. And so are you.

Babies change us. Even when we have done it before. This baby is different, YOU are different, the rules are different, it’s all new again and that can be terrifying. And nobody warns us. Nobody tells us that despite doing it before you are back at the start. If parenthood was a Monopoly board you’re sat on go, scotty dog at the ready, no streets yet purchased, no collecting £200. It’s all still to come. And every game is different.

We had an 8 year gap between our boys. Not by choice but by default of circumstances and those eight years were amazing. We found our way as parents, got to know our beautiful boy and watched him grow from this tiny little hungry bundle into a super chilled out caring and hilarious little dude that we genuinely love to hang out with. He got more and more independent, which is a double edged sword I struggle with. It’s awesome he can grab himself a snack, but it will kill me the day he refuses to hold my hand in public! It’s not happened yet but his peers have already done it and its only a matter of time…..

Eight years as a mummy is a fair bit of experience right? And I’ve worked with kids since I basically was one myself, starting my teaching degree at the ripe old age of 17. So I totally know my stuff yeah? Um, nope. You know the phrase “use it or lose it” well thats totally true of a lot of us with parenting brand new babies. I use the phrase “They are only this little for such a little while” in some of my marketing materials. Its not just a marketing phrase, its reality. They really are only tiny for a blink and you’ll miss it time frame. So its easy to forget. And easy to think it wasn’t so hard, they didn’t cry this much, they slept brilliantly etc etc etc.

Brand new babies are just that, they are brand new. They don’t know what they’re doing, they haven’t done the before and to all intents and purposes neither have you because you haven’t been mummy or daddy to THIS baby before. So don’t let anyone tell you you should have your sh*t together, should know what you’re doing, or make you feel any pressure to be sailing through without any bumps.

So thats my mantra through this muddy watered journey of new mummy hood. He’s brand new, and so am I.

1st Birthday cake smash for Alexander

1st Birthday cake smash for Alexander

1st birthday cake smash by Beautiful Bairns Edinburgh

I have been photographing Alexander since he was a bump and his mummy came for her maternity photoshoot with me. It was a special day as she didn’t have a single photograph of herself pregnant despite this being her 6th pregnancy! Since then I have been delighted to capture Alexander as a gorgeous newborn and at various stages throughout his first year. So a 1st Birthday cake smash was always on the cards but when his Mummy told me her idea for a theme I was SO excited! As a huge Peter Rabbit fan there could be only one choice so we put our heads together and planned and shopped and sourced and oh my goodness what a result! Alexanders mummy made the bespoke bunting and had his gorgeous knitted outfits made especially by the super talented Grandma Joyce who makes many of my knitted hats and blankets for the studio. We managed to source some “proper” carrots with tops on and had a cake made in the colours and with little carrot decorations on top. The whole set up was just gorgeous and will long be a favourite of mine!

If you would like to discuss booking your own 1st birthday cake smash please get in touch via the contact page!

You have an amazing talent and Bruce and I send you so many thanks for all you have done. We will treasure these!!!!

Newborn photography Edinburgh – Harry 4 weeks new

Little Harry came to the studio for his newborn baby photo session at four weeks of age and was such a gorgeous little bundle! Newborn babies are my favourite age to photograph as they are only this little for such a short amount of time and they change SO quickly! Although Harry was a little older than the magic under 14 days newborn stage he was still an absolute angel and posed for me no problem at all! Some newborn baby photographers wont work with babies who are older than 14 days of age as they quickly build muscle tone and become more alert. But how could I possibly say no to older babies when they are this cute?!

Here are a few of the images from his gallery which I’m delighted to say both Mummy and Daddy loved! I can’t wait to see them all again in the New Year when he is sitting, smiling and showing me all his new tricks!
