Edinburgh Newborn Photography: Why You Must Take Family Portraits At Your Newborn Session

Why I believe you need Family Portraits as part of your newborn session:

I have so many clients that come to a newborn session too tired to even think about having their own portraits taken and so opt out on having them taken. I always encourage my clients to be in images, even if they are tired and have no makeup on so that we capture these first memories with your baby. Your baby will never be this small again!

How To Prepare For Your Newborn Session Family Portraits:

If you haven’t had time to get ready before leaving for the studio that is not a problem. Mums you can bring your makeup or hair products and get ready in the toilet while I settle baby to sleep. I always do family portraits at the start of my newborn sessions so that once these photos have been taken you can relax and watch me pose baby. Even if you feel like you don’t look your best I genuinely believe your baby wont care! Think of these family portraits as a family heirloom to be passed down for generations. Your children will cherish them forever and even more so when you are gone. Your first family photo is something truly special indeed!

What To Wear For Your Newborn Session Family Portraits:

I always recommend wearing something simple and classic for your newborn session family portraits. I recommend choosing either white or a dark neutral such as black/navy or dark grey and I recommend no patterns or logos. You don’t want to look at the images in 10 years time and think, “what was I wearing?” These images are all about the love and connection you have as new parents and your precious new baby. By keeping clothing simple this prevents any distractions.

Hate Having Your Picture Taken? How Not To Feel Awkward:

I get it, I truly do. You might be shocked to hear this but almost all photographers HATE having their photos taken! It’s often how we ended up behind the camera instead of in front! So please know that I do understand how you feel. I don’t expect you to behave like a supermodel! If parents feel a little awkward in front of the camera, I encourage them to look at their baby. This usually makes new parents relax and feel more at ease as all you have to do is gaze at that gorgeous baby of yours while I capture the love you have for them!

What if my baby doesn’t sleep during their newborn session? I get asked this a lot.

I get a lot of new parents who are worried that their newborn won’t sleep during their newborn session. And I want to reassure you! Don’t worry, I have been doing this for so long that I always have a backup plan!

During every newborn session I work around baby and their needs at all times.  By allowing baby to lead the session I can get to know them, their needs and what they are most comfortable with. If they are an awake and alert baby we do extra awake images until they fall asleep. If they seem unhappy being naked and prefer being wrapped like in the womb then we focus on that! I always say that baby is the boss in my studio. Having photographed newborns for the past ten years I am pretty good at reading their cues to know what they do and don’t like. And their safety and comfort is my priority for every session I do!

But I know that you REALLY want those sleepy shots. So I have some tricks up my sleeve. A warm cosy studio, white noise and a full belly always help a baby to drift off. And if they need a bit more time for this that is never a problem. Your baby won’t be rushed.

And if they do wake up? Well you can bet I will grab those shots too! I just love the curious expressions I get when baby has just woken up!

It is best to book your newborn session before baby arrives as newborns are best photographed under 14 days old! To book your newborn session please email me at rachael@beautifulbairns.com or use the booking link on the newborn page.

Putting myself in my clients shoes – our family photoshoot with Nina Mace

When the photographer becomes the client – our family photoshoot with Nina Mace!

If you have been to the studio before you will no doubt have heard me say that I base most things in my business on myself as a customer. By putting myself in my clients shoes I can identify areas to improve, change and grow. And photographers are notorious for never actually stepping in front of the camera as we are always busy photographing other families! As Ollie is starting school this year I decided we needed an up to date family portrait. He has changed SO much since our last family photoshoot and I wanted to capture the boys as they are just now. Lewis is now in S2 and days away from becoming a teenager so who knows if he will be so willing next time?

Lockdown weight gain meant I wasn’t feeling my best I’ll admit. But my kids dont care what size jeans I wear (who am I kidding, I haven’t worn jeans in over a year!) or if I have a bit of double chin going on. And the photos Nina captured of me looking at my boys are SO special to me. But more importantly it means that they’ll always have a photo of their mama looking at them with pure love.

In the run up to the photoshoot I ordered new outfits and shoes for us all so that we had a coordinated colour palette that I knew would work with the background colours. I didnt want our clothing to distract from the overall image or facial expressions which are key in family portraits.

When I book a family photoshoot with clients I am always happy to help pick out clothing and make suggestions. With this in mind I sent Nina screenshots of what we had planned so that she knew in advance the colours we would be wearing. I think the pale blues really work beautifully against the shades of green and Im already planning how to display them in our home (in the new Scandi frame which will be available to see in the studio soon!)

Much like when I photograph families, Nina gave us very little direction instead allowing us to interact, chat and have fun! She chose lovely spots with beautiful light and I’m so happy with the final images.

We had a lovely time having our family portraits taken and I am so gld we did it despite me feeling nervous!

If you’d like to see more of Nina’s work you can check out her website here. Having trained with Nina on several ocassions in the past I knew she would put us at ease and make us all comfortable so we could enjoy the whole process!

If 2020 taught us anything it’s that none of us can take life for granted. Your kids won’t always be so cute and little. Your parents won’t always be around.
