Newborn Sleep: Why You Don’t Need to Worry During Your Photoshoot (I Have All the Tricks!)
If you’re preparing for your newborn photography session, one of the biggest worries parents share with me is: “What if my baby doesn’t sleep?”
Let me reassure you from the very start — your baby does not need to be sleepy, settled, or predictable before you arrive. Newborns are newborns. They feed often, poop often, fuss sometimes, cluster feed randomly, and change their minds in seconds. And that’s exactly what I expect.
The good news?
After photographing thousands of babies across Edinburgh, I have every trick, technique, and baby-whispering strategy to keep your newborn comfortable, calm, and happy — awake or asleep.
This guide explains everything you need to know about newborn sleep and why you absolutely don’t need to worry during your photoshoot.
Understanding Newborn Sleep: Why It’s So Unpredictable
Newborn sleep is unlike adult sleep. Babies have:
-
Short sleep cycles (20–40 minutes)
-
No circadian rhythm yet
-
Tiny tummies (so they feed a lot)
-
Rapid brain development during sleep
This means newborns drift in and out of sleep easily — sometimes deeply, sometimes lightly — and that is COMPLETELY normal.
It’s also why experienced newborn photographers never rely on a baby “being sleepy”. Instead, we create the conditions that encourage sleep, relaxation, and comfort.
Why You Don’t Need Your Baby to Arrive Asleep
Many parents try to “prep” their baby for the session by:
-
Keeping them awake
-
Stretching feeds
-
Overstimulating them
-
Delaying naps
Please don’t! Overtired babies cry more, sleep less, and settle slowly.
When you arrive, your baby simply needs:
-
A full tummy
-
Warmth
-
Comfort
-
Gentle handling
Everything else — I take care of.
My Newborn Sleep Tricks (This Is Where Experience Matters!)
Here’s exactly what I use in the studio to help babies drift into deep, restful slumber… or stay calm and content if they’re awake.
1. The Perfect Studio Temperature
Babies sleep best when they’re warm, so my studio is heated to the ideal newborn-safe temperature.
Warm babies = sleepy babies.
And for awake babies, warmth keeps them relaxed and settled.
2. Professional White Noise
I use specialist newborn-calming audio that mimics the sounds of the womb: rhythmic, constant, and incredibly soothing.
It stops startling, reduces fussing, and helps babies relax deeply.
3. Expert Swaddling
Not all swaddles are the same. I use:
-
Stretchy wraps
-
Breathable fabrics
-
Layering techniques
-
Secure-but-safe methods
Swaddling prevents flailing arms, the startle reflex, and restlessness. Most babies settle into calm sleep within minutes.
4. Gentle Rocking Techniques
Years of experience have taught me:
-
The right speed
-
The right rhythm
-
The right way to hold and settle a newborn
Every baby is different, but every baby responds to calm, confident handling.
5. Full Feeding Breaks Are Encouraged
We take as many breaks as needed.
Hungry babies don’t sleep.
And babies who eat well feel safe, warm, and relaxed — perfect for sleepy poses.
There is NO rush.
There is NO pressure.
This session works around your baby, always.
6. Knowing Sleepy Cues vs Awake Cues
I read newborn signals instantly:
-
Are they tired?
-
About to feed?
-
Want to stretch?
-
Need winding?
Because I can anticipate the next step, I settle babies quickly and calmly without overstimulation or stress.
7. Awake Babies Photograph Beautifully Too
This is important:
Awake babies are just as photogenic as sleepy babies.
We can capture:
-
Big bright eyes
-
Cute expressions
-
Gorgeous bonding moments
-
Baby holding your finger
-
Soft stretches and gazes
Some of my favourite ever images were taken when baby was wide awake.
There is no bad way for a baby to behave during their session.
Why Your Only Job Is to Relax
Your baby will sense your mood. If you’re relaxed, they’re relaxed.
When you arrive at your newborn session:
-
Enjoy a cup of tea
-
Sit and get comfy on the sofa
-
Enjoy the calm
-
And watch me work my magic
I’ve photographed every kind of baby:
Sleepy, wriggly, fussy, windy, colicky, hungry-every-20-minutes babies — and every single session results in a beautiful gallery.
This is what I do.
I don’t expect perfect behaviour.
I expect newborn behaviour.
And I know exactly how to work with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
“What if my baby cries the whole time?”
Crying is normal. I stop, settle, cuddle, or help with feeding. Breaks are built in.
“What if my baby won’t settle?”
All babies settle eventually with the right combination of warmth, feeding, and swaddling. I have never had a session where we couldn’t create a full gallery.
“Do I need to prepare anything?”
No. Just bring baby. I provide everything else.
