Prepare Your Baby for the Clocks Going Forward — Sleep Tips

How to Prepare Your Baby or Toddler for the Clocks Going Forward (Avoid Sleep Disruption)

When the clocks go forward in spring, many parents quietly dread losing that precious hour of sleep. For babies and toddlers, even a one-hour shift can disrupt naps, bedtime routines, and those already-early mornings.

If you’re wondering how to prepare your baby for the clocks going forward without throwing their whole routine off track, you’re not alone. With a few gentle adjustments in the days leading up to the time change, you can help your little one adapt smoothly and avoid unnecessary sleep disruption.

And if you’re in the middle of this season with a growing baby at home, you’ll know just how quickly these early months pass. Between sleep shifts and milestone changes, the first year moves faster than you expect — something I see every week in my work as a baby photographer in Edinburgh.

Let’s look at some simple, practical ways to make the transition easier for everyone.

Why the Clock Change Affects Your Baby

Babies rely on routine and consistency. Losing an hour of sleep can throw off their internal body clock, causing early waking, shorter naps, or fussier evenings. Preparing your baby in advance helps their body clock adapt gradually, keeping sleep as peaceful as possible.

Shift the Schedule Gradually

Start a few days before the clocks go forward by adjusting your baby’s day — including meals, naps, and bedtime — by 10–15 minutes earlier each day. This gentle approach helps their internal clock move forward naturally.

Example:
If bedtime is usually 7:00pm:

  • Tuesday – 6:50pm

  • Wednesday – 6:40pm

  • Thursday – 6:30pm
…and so on until the clocks change.

Use Light to Help Reset Their Clock

Light plays a powerful role in regulating your baby’s internal clock. When the clocks go forward and evenings suddenly feel lighter, it can make bedtime more challenging.

To help your baby adjust:

  • Maximise morning light: Open curtains as soon as your baby wakes and, if possible, get outside for natural daylight. Morning light helps signal that it’s time to start the day.

  • Keep evenings dim: Lower the lights in the hour before bed and avoid screens where possible. A darker environment encourages melatonin production and signals that sleep is coming.

  • Create a calm sleep space: Blackout blinds can help maintain a consistent sleep environment even as sunrise arrives earlier.

For further reassurance, you can read the NHS guidance on baby sleep routines and the safe sleep recommendations from The Lullaby Trust, both of which offer evidence-based advice for supporting healthy sleep habits.

Consistency, light exposure, and a calming bedtime routine work together to gently shift your baby’s rhythm forward.

Stick to a Consistent Bedtime Routine

Even with the time shift, keeping your evening routine familiar — bath, book, cuddle, lullaby — helps signal to your baby that sleep is coming. Consistency is key, even if bedtime comes “earlier” by the clock.

Adjust Mealtimes Too

Shift meals slightly earlier to match the new schedule. Consistent feeding intervals reinforce your baby’s body clock and make the sleep adjustment smoother.

Be Patient — This Stage Won’t Last Forever

It may take several days — sometimes up to a week — for your baby to fully adjust to the clocks going forward. Some little ones adapt quickly, while others need a little more reassurance, consistency, and calm.

If sleep feels unsettled for a few days, that’s completely normal. Stay consistent with your routines, use light to gently guide their body clock, and give yourself grace too. Parenting through time changes can feel exhausting — especially when you’re already navigating early mornings and broken nights.

And while it might not feel like it during the 5am wake-ups, this stage is fleeting.

The tiny stretches, the sleepy cuddles, the way they nestle into your shoulder — these moments change so quickly in the first year. If you’d love to remember your baby exactly as they are right now, you can explore my relaxed, baby-led newborn and baby photography sessions in Edinburgh
