The Importance of Inclusivity in Maternity Photography:
Embracing Every Body
The importance of inclusivity in maternity photography is often overlooked. Pregnancy is a time of transformation, strength, and beauty. However, many women struggle with insecurities about their changing bodies. Every mother deserves to feel radiant and confident in her own skin.
Maternity photography should celebrate all bodies, not just those seen in magazines or social media. Since every pregnancy is unique, every mother deserves representation.
Breaking the “Perfect” Image of Motherhood
For years, the media has promoted a narrow view of pregnancy. Most images showcase slim women with round bumps and flawless skin. Unfortunately, this ideal excludes many expecting mothers.
In reality, pregnancy looks different for everyone. Some carry small, while others carry high or low. Some have stretch marks, scars, or loose skin. Rather than viewing these features as flaws, we should recognize them as part of the journey.
Because of this, maternity photography must reflect diversity. No mother should avoid photos because she doesn’t fit a certain mold.
How Photographers Can Promote Body Inclusivity
Creating an inclusive experience goes beyond just who we photograph. Instead, it’s about how we make every client feel welcome and empowered. Here are a few key ways to promote inclusivity:
1. Thoughtful Posing for Every Body
Since every body is different, posing should highlight each woman’s natural beauty. By using soft angles and natural movements, I help clients feel comfortable and confident.
2. Offering a Diverse Wardrobe
Many maternity gowns cater to a single body type. To ensure every woman feels beautiful, I provide a variety of sizes and styles. This allows clients to choose what makes them feel best. You can see examples in my client closet.
3. Embracing Natural Beauty in Editing
While editing can enhance a photo, it should never erase authenticity. Instead of removing stretch marks, freckles, or skin texture, I focus on refining lighting and tones. This way, the final image remains both polished and real.
4. Showcasing Diversity in Portfolios
Representation matters, especially in maternity photography. When women see others who look like them in professional portraits, they feel more confident stepping in front of the camera. By displaying diverse images, I help break the stereotype of what pregnancy “should” look like.
5. Creating a Judgment-Free Space
Since pregnancy is deeply personal, many women arrive at their sessions with insecurities. For this reason, I make it a priority to create a space where they feel safe, seen, and celebrated. My studio is also a trans and queer friendly space.
Why Body Inclusivity Matters
Ultimately, maternity photography is about more than just taking pictures. It’s about creating meaningful memories that mothers will cherish for years to come.
When a mother looks back at her photos, she should see her strength, love, and anticipation—not an unrealistic version of herself. By embracing inclusivity, we show that beauty exists in all forms.
In the end, maternity photography isn’t about perfection. Rather, it’s about capturing real, raw, and powerful moments. And that magic exists in every body.
